Associate Curator of Traditional African Art, Museum for African Art, New York

The Museum for African Art is pleased to announce a new position funded by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. The Associate Curator of Traditional African Art will have a Ph.D. degree and will have already produced a number of exhibitions and publications. In this position, the individual will be expected to regularly curate exhibitions as well as work closely with Museum Guest Curators to develop exhibitions and publications for the Museum for African Art on subjects related to the traditional arts of Africa.

The Museum for African Art has a history of presenting art exhibitions of the highest aesthetic quality and scholarly content. The Museum's commitment to education has always emphasized the presentation of African art in its cultural and historical context. We are recruiting candidates who are committed to this dual ideal.

The Associate Curator of Traditional African Art will work in collaboration with the museum's Curator of Contemporary African Art and Associate Director of Curatorial Affairs, in conceiving, developing and organizing traveling and non-traveling exhibitions each year in approximately 21,000 square feet of gallery space throughout the building. The Associate Curator of Traditional African Art is expected to conceive and develop exhibitions of traditional African art that have both intellectual depth and popular appeal. The individual in this position will assist in the supervision and mentorship of two-year curatorial fellows.

The Associate Curator is a line position, with potential for advancement in the Museum's Curatorial Department. Travel support is included for professional conference and offsite advisory meetings of exhibition project teams.

Duties and Responsibilities:

-Research, coordinate, liaise, and facilitate exhibitions for the Museum for African Art
-Work with guest curators and institutions to implement exhibitions for the Museum for African Art
-Generate text for projects including but not limited to: catalogue essays, label copy, grant applications, correspondence, press releases, marketing materials, website and social media sites, newsletters, and contracts
-Present public lectures related to exhibitions and other Museum related Education department projects
-Develop and maintain relationships with collectors, dealers and scholars in the field
-Acquire objects for the museum's permanent collection
-Work with the Development department to give tours and presentations when needed
-Assist in decision making tasks related to the curatorial department such as exhibition projects, staffing, gallery requirements, exhibition design, and curatorial strategy
-Travel to conferences and exhibition openings
-Work closely in collaboration with other departments, particularly Education and Development, on items that relate to exhibitions and programming

Fellowship:
Curatorial Fellow, Museum for African Art, New York

The Museum for African Art is pleased to announce a new postdoctoral fellowship funded by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. The Curatorial Fellow will be a postdoctoral scholar (ABD considered) who possesses a strong knowledge of the field of African Art. Preference will be given to applicants who specialize in art of the African Diaspora. This position calls for a close relationship with exhibition curators to help plan and implement exhibitions and publications. During tenure at the Museum, the Fellow will contribute significantly to the preparation of three to five individual exhibitions.

A majority of the Museum for African Art's exhibitions during the Fellow's two year appointment will involve guest curators who represent the top of their fields both academically and curatorially. Though the Fellow will be primarily mentored by the Curator of Contemporary Art, the new Associate Curator of Traditional Art, and Associate Director of Curatorial Affairs, (s)he would also have the rate opportunity to work directly with the guest curators in their areas of expertise.

The Curatorial Fellow will be encouraged to develop an exhibition in his or her area of expertise, working closely with the Museum for African Art curatorial staff, guest curators and advisors. There is potential for the exhibition and accompanying publications to develop into an exhibition presented by the Museum for African Art at a future date. Grant funds will support travel in pursuit of research.

Andrew W. Mellon Curatorial Fellowships, Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago, IL

The Art Institute of Chicago is pleased to announce two postdoctoral fellowships, funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, for outstanding scholars who have recently earned PhDs (or equivalent degrees from foreign universities) and wish to pursue curatorial careers in art museums. These three-year Fellowships will support scholarly research related to the collections and projects of the Art Institute of Chicago and will provide curatorial training. The Art Institute of Chicago is one of the nation's leading art museums, containing extensive holdings in most of the world's major cultures.

Fellows will be fully integrated into the appropriate curatorial department. They will have the opportunity to work on a wide range of activities and with colleagues across the museum, including curatorial, conservation, education, registration, imaging, and administrative staff. They will have access to the collections, to the museum's research libraries and local university libraries, and other professional privileges accorded the museum's curatorial staff.

Time will be divided between specific projects and more general curatorial work within the department. In consultation with the supervising curator, Mellon Fellows will plan and complete a final project that complements their areas of study and participation in the department. Such a project might include a publication, focused exhibition, or interpretive program related to the permanent collection. Mellon Fellows will deliver at least one public lecture each year.

Mellon Fellows will receive a stipend, plus benefits, research funds, and a travel allowance. The two Fellowships are scheduled to commence in Fall 2012.

Fellowship:
Five-College Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowship in African Art 2012-2015

Mount Holyoke College and Smith College invite applications for a three-year postdoctoral fellowship in African art and architecture starting July 1, 2012. This Mellon-funded position supports exceptionally promising young scholars for three years of half-time teaching (one course each semester) and half-time research. We seek candidates with interests that extend beyond a single geographic region and into the contemporary period. We particularly welcome candidates who can teach at both the introductory and advanced levels.

Over three years, the fellow will teach six courses, four at Mount Holyoke College (the home campus) and two at Smith College. The fellow will also be provided with research and teaching mentors.

This program is designed to provide fellows with valuable teaching experience and time to complete and publish their research prior to seeking full-time tenure-track positions. Fellows are encouraged to develop independent research projects vigorously and in association with the local college art museums and the African Studies Council, which includes some 35 Africanists in various disciplines working together across the five campuses to share resources, coordinate curriculum, run faculty seminars, residency programs, and publish the African Studies Review.

This postdoctoral fellowship is a full-time salaried appointment with excellent benefits and research support provided and is open only to recent Ph.D.s. Position:
Curator for African Art, Department for Arts of Africa, the Americas, Asia, and the Pacific Islands, Baltimore Museum of Art, Baltimore, MD

Overview: The BMA is seeking a dynamic and innovative Curator and Department Head for African Art to join an 11-member curatorial team in an institution with both an impressive collection of African objects and a strong record of scholarship and major African art exhibitions. Directing the Department for Arts of Africa, the Americas, Asia and the Pacific Islands, the curator will oversee the BMA's extensive collection of over 2,000 African objects including textiles. The curator reports to the Deputy Director of Curatorial Affairs. The Department is supported by a Curatorial Assistant, a part-time Associate Curator for the Arts of Asia, plus work study students, and interns. The Museum supports the engagement of consulting scholars to offer Museum staff expertise in overseeing all the collections that make up this department.

The curator's first assignment represents a major opportunity, the formulation of plans for a new installation of the African collection, part of a current project for reinstallation of several major collections. This project is collaborative including colleagues in education as well as exhibition design and installation. The objective is to develop new approaches for display and interpretation based on the commitment of delivering memorable and inspiring experiences with works of art to a broad and diverse public.

S/he will work with a dedicated group of collectors, including the support group, The Friends of the Arts of Africa, The Pacific, and the Americas. Through exhibitions, public programs, and publications of scholarly significance, this curator will enhance a long tradition of commitment to the appreciation and study of African Art. S/he will build new and more diverse audiences and help connect the BMA to other arts and academic institutions in Baltimore.

Requirements:This position requires an advanced degree with a specialty in African Art, a record of scholarship, and a minimum of 5 years of curatorial experience. The Curator will work collaboratively both inside and outside the institution and known for demonstrating leadership. S/he will have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including writing and public speaking skills. The candidate will be creative, innovative, and influential. S/he will be skilled in diplomacy, negotiation, planning, and organization.

The Department of Art & Art History at Florida International University in Miami seeks a full-time, tenure-track art historian at the Assistant Professor level who specializes in art outside of the Euro-American tradition (such as historical Art of the Americas, Africa, Asia, and Middle East). Andrew W. Mellon Fellowships - Detroit Institute of Arts

Position Overview: The Detroit Institute of Arts is seeking candidates for a one-year post-doctoral fellowship funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Recognizing the growing gap between academic art history and art museums and the increasing demand for excellent art historians within the curatorial field, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation conceived this program to introduce art historians at the beginning of their careers to curatorial opportunities. The Detroit Institute of Arts was selected for this initiative due to the quality and comprehensive nature of its collections, the excellence of its curatorial staff, and the strength of its conservation laboratory.

Candidates may apply for a fellowship in any of the following curatorial departments: African American Art; African, Oceanic and New World Cultures; American Art; The Arts of Asia and the Islamic World; Contemporary Art; European Art; and Prints, Drawings, and Photographs. Mellon Fellows are fully integrated into the appropriate curatorial departments and have the opportunity to work closely with a large curatorial, conservation, and education staff. Assistant Professor: Non-Western Art History - Emerson College, Department of Visual and Media Arts

Position Overview: The Department of Visual and Media Arts at Emerson College seeks an Assistant Professor of non-western art history (area of specialization is open). The initial appointment is for a tenure-track Assistant Professor for the 2012-2013 academic year beginning September 1, 2012.

The applicant must have a Ph.D. in Art History or complete the degree by the time of appointment. Applicants must have college-level teaching experience and demonstrate promise as a scholar working in the field as indicated by peer reviewed presentations and publications, innovative research, and critical recognition of the work. Postdoctoral Fellowship in the Humanities - Brandeis University, Mandel Center for the Humanities

Position Overview: The Mandel Center for the Humanities at Brandeis University invites applications for a two-year, non-renewable Charlotte Zysman Postdoctoral Fellowship in the Humanities, to begin Fall 2012.

The Fellow, who will be appointed as a faculty member at the rank of Lecturer, will teach one course per semester: one course each year will be offered in his or her area of expertise in Art History, and the other course will be designed in conjunction with the Mandel Center as part of its interdisciplinary humanities curriculum. The Fellow will also be expected to give a formal lecture at the Humanities Center during the first year on his or her research, and to organize a small conference or symposium on a related topic within the Humanities during the second year of the fellowship. He or she will receive a salary of $50,000 and a research fund of $1,500 per year. Relocation paid up to $1000.

Applicants must hold a PhD in Art History with evidence of scholarly training or publications in a secondary field of Literature or Music. Scholars from Western or non-Western fields are welcome to apply, provided their training has the requisite interdisciplinary scope. Assistant Professor of Art: Art History (Non-Western) - McNeese State University

McNeese State University invites qualified applicants and nominations for the position of Assistant Professor of Art: Art History (Non-Western) in the Department of Visual Arts. This is a full-time, 9-month, tenure track, unclassified position. The appointment begins January 2012.

Position Description and Responsibilities: The Assistant Professor of Art: Art History (Non-Western) is responsible for teaching a range of topics on Non-Western art, as well as general survey courses. Instructional load consists of 4 courses per semester (fall/spring) with a weekly minimum of 10 office-hours per semester (spring/fall). Successful candidates must undertake academic advising, implementation of university enhancement initiatives, management of visual resources and equipment, committee appointments, and scholarly endeavors.

Qualifications: Required: Master of Arts in Art History with a specialization in Non-Western Art. College-level teaching experience strongly preferred.

Salary: $44,000

ACASA, the Arts Council of the African Studies Association, promotes greater understanding of African material and expressive culture in all its many forms, and encourages contact and collaboration with African and Diaspora artists and scholars.
